There is a reason why Ella Jenkins is known as America’s “First Lady of Children’s Music” and every time my girls and I hear another of her songs I am reminded why she earned this honorary title. Chances are you’re familiar with the works of Ella Jenkins (even if you didn’t know it) but your kiddos may not have yet been introduced to this great children’s artist.
The newest release from Ella Jenkins and Smithsonian Folkways is aptly titled 123s and ABCs. This fun album contains 16 tracks that teach counting and the alphabet in multiple languages.
The first time we listened to the album was while running errands one day. I was very amused when my girls made me stay in the car extra long so they could finish listening to the song they were learning.
At any given time of the day we can hear one of my kids singing their favorite songs from the album. My 6-year-old will alternate belting out “This Old Man” with her 4-year-old sister who can’t sing get enough of “Eight Clay Pigeons.” My husband even told me that our youngest was “Counting in Swahili” the other night at bed while she was half asleep. Definitely the mark of a well-loved children’s album!
This 31 minute album comes with a 28-page with song lyrics and from beginning to end your kids will enjoy Ella Jenkins and her joyful engagement and respect for all children comes through while she teaches, sings, and plays games!
