As much fun as dying eggs can be the mess is more than I enjoy dealing with, and quite frankly, NO ONE in my house will eat the stinkin’ hard boiled eggs! In an effort to still have some fun Easter themed crafts for my kids and avoid all the egg drama I’m sharing 3 alternative ways to decorate your eggs this year.
1. Cascarones :: for the past two years my kids have made cascarones in their Spanish class and have loved every minute of making these hollowed out eggshells. You can learn more info about cascarones HERE.
To make your own start with a thumb sized hole in one end of an eggshell and remove the egg (French toast was a great meal to use up the eggs we had). Then rinse the shells well with water and a drop of dish soap. You can dye the eggs or let them completely dry and color them with markers or paint them and allow to dry. Fill with confetti or small toys, and then seal the eggs by applying glue around the edges of the hole and then covering with a small piece of tissue paper. Traditionally cascarones would be smashed on the head as a sign of good luck but kids can have just as much fun smashing them on the sidewalk if you’d like to avoid the mess.
2. Temporary Tattoos :: if you too have a stash of temporary tattoos that you think will last until the end of times then this will be a welcome suggestion. Simply apply the desired temporary tattoo to an egg as you would your skin. We used uncooked eggs and then just used the eggs later for meals but you can also hollow out the shells as described above to keep the shells for longer.
3. Egg Crafts :: in an effort to make my life the easiest it can be I bought my kids some fun egg themed crafts. I picked up this Egg Buddies Sticker Book at a local store but you can also find them online. It was worth every penny to let my kids decorate the egg shaped stickers with fun faces and accessories with ZERO mess.
With just a few days until Easter I hope these egg-cellent (I totally went there) alternatives to dying eggs can help you keep the kids entertained and prevent you from having too big of a mess to clean up this week!
