A few months back someone I knew was starting a book club and asked on social media if anyone else would be interested. I quickly put in my “YES!’ reply and a few weeks later went to the first book club night. If you’re wondering “Why would I want to start a book club?” let me just tell you, 1) You get to read actual grown up books! 2) A regularly scheduled girls night! and 3) Wine & Snacks! (because those really are important).
There are many great reasons why you should start a book club of your own and honestly, it’s easier than you may think. So here’s some tips to get you started on forming your own book club…
1. Find some fellow minded book lovers to join. This could be an established group of girlfriends, all the soccer team moms, or even an open invite on social media to see who from your friends list would like to join. Ask more people than you think you’ll need because inevitably some people will have sick kids, broken cars, visiting in-laws, or vacations when your book club meets.
2. Pick a day. You could decide on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, every other Saturday afternoon, or even choose a different time each time you meet for the next book club.
3. Choose a location. You can host at your own home, one of the other members could host, or you could even pick a local coffee shop to meet at (of course, then it’s coffee and snacks, not wine). Your local library may even offer a book club in a bag with all the books you’ll need as well as some discussion questions.
4. Decide on books to read. Our book club has a list of suggestions from all the members that we are working our way through as we mix up the genres from month to month. I’ve heard of other book clubs where the members all vote on the next book.
5. Everyone helps. While all the logistics and everything else for a book club could quickly become overwhelming if you’re expected to pick the book, open your home to meet, and provide all the drinks and snacks, it is significantly easier if you share the load. We have one book club member who consistently opens her home for us all, but the rest of the members bring bottles of wine, snacks, and help clean up after we meet.
I really hope you’re feeling inspired to start a book club (or two) and get in some much needed girl time while enriching your mind!
