community goods :: plastic free toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and conditioner

If you’re anything like me, you probably have a plastic graveyard in your bathroom. Half-used hair products, gunky toothpaste tubes, and enough bottles of lotion to moisturize an elephant. TLC could probably produce a beauty product edition of Hoarders and cast my bathroom.

In my older age, I have learned to minimize. I have also become more aware of all the senseless waste we can accumulate in our homes.  I was drawn to Community Goods because of their effort to reduce plastic packaging.

Over 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes get discarded each year.  Almost none of those tubes get recycled,  since they’re made of mixed materials and often have toothpaste residue inside.  They get incinerated or landfilled, or end up polluting rivers and oceans, leaching harmful chemicals into our food and water supply.

Alternatively, each jar of the new Community Goods Fresh Mint Toothpaste Tablets replaces 2 to 3 plastic tubes. The jars are made of easily recyclable glass and aluminum. And the tablets are naturally whitening, with nano-hydroxyapatite to remineralize teeth.

I have been using the Fresh Mint Toothpaste Tablets for about a month. They are a different experience, but I have adjusted to it. I simply chew up a tablet and then I use my very cute bamboo toothbrush. There is a heavy baking soda flavor that gives a minty and salty experience.

The shampoo and conditioner bars did have me wondering how that would work. It was pleasantly surprised that my hair lathered very well. I either rub the bar in my hands and apply it to my hair or I just scrub my head directly with the bar. I have very thick hair and I find the application to seem less wasteful. I don’t slop shampoo around the shower.

Deodorant can be plastic free too! The container reminds me of a push up pop. The deodorant seems to be effective and the packaging works too!

Don’t be intimidated to make this switch. You’ll be saving money and smell great.  Plus, your bathroom will be as chic and minimalist. Give it a try! If all else fails, at least your bathroom will look a lot less like a plastic landfill.

The Community Goods Fresh Mint Toothpaste Tablets ($29) offers a four month supply of toothpaste, which uses nano hydroxyapatite instead of fluoride to strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.
