This coming week my girls and I are going to make a trek to our local library to sign up for their summer reading club. With Michaela actually beginning to read, this summer will include a LOT of books for her to sharpen her skills with.
Keeping with the theme of summer I am excited to share Frog and Friends: Outdoor Surprises by Eve Bunting from Sleeping Bear Press. This is a fun book for early readers (Grades 1-2) with some fun stories about the adventures Frog and his friends have at the pond.
Both my girls enjoyed reading these stories and looking at the adorable illustrations by Josee Masse. I can honestly say that all three stories in the book were equally entertaining for them and that I was immediately asked to read the entire book again after our first reading.
While the girls enjoyed the stories and illustrations (okay, I enjoyed them too) I really appreciated the tips on the inside cover of the book. There was a whole page of guidance from Joy L. Towner, Professor of Education at Judson University in Elgin, IL. She discussed the three different types of readers who this book would be good for (Independent Readers, Newly Independent Readers, and Nonreaders and Emergent Readers). There were also suggestions on how to help each type of reader get the most out of their book reading experience.
While the book has a suggested reading age of 1st-2nd grade any kiddo who enjoys frogs and other forest animals would enjoy this book in my opinion.
