“Teen Beach Movie,” part of the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise which introduced a generation to movie musicals, follows teen surfing sweethearts Brady and McKenzie, who together ride the last wave of summer, one that mysteriously takes them into a classic beach party movie, “Wet Side Story.” There, it’s surfers versus bikers for control of the beach hangout…and everyone spontaneously breaks into song and dance. Now, Brady and McKenzie must try to return to present day, but their lives may be changed forever when they inadvertently alter the movie’s romantic storyline — and the handsome leading man, surfer Tanner is falling for McKenzie while biker girl Lela is swooning for Brady.
I have heard of ALL ages of kids who like this movie. And the kicker? I really didn’t see a lot that would persuade my 4 year old away from watching it! When I first heard the title, and it included “Teen”, I was thinking this is something that I was not even going to let my 7 year old watch. I mean, do we really need more sass or attitude in television shows and movies these days?  I was wrong. 🙂  I got this home and put it in becuase I knew as soon as the girls saw it that they would want to watch it.
Just imagine, two kids from present day popping back in time.  The awkwardness of the times changing is present for a little while, then they all continue as normal.  It has some pretty fun parts.  Some unrealistic ones too…as adults, you will see this.  But the younger kids don’t notice at all 🙂
The music and dancing is highly entertaining, obviously as this is a fun spin on the West Side Story. There is a quarrel going on, but the point of the movie isn’t really about this. There are lots of parts outside of that. Â That made me happy as I don’t really want my girls watching fighting or arguing, and I guard as much as possible.
There is love, but not the kind where they are making out on screen.  They give googley eyes a time or two, talk about it and that’s about the worst of it. 🙂
