All of my children love books, but my daughter is the biggest reader of them all. She’ll sit down and devour a whole book in one afternoon. When she was reading Bash and the Pirate Pig, she laughed aloud several times and even wound up with a case of the giggles a time or two. The story is about a boy named Raymond, who is called Beamer, whose parents send him to live with his cousin Bash for the summer. They want him to run and climb trees and see nature, but city-dwelling, comic-book-reading Beamer isn’t even the least bit interested in cows, chickens, and pigs or tractors and fields. Or his wild and crazy cousin. Bash brings a lot of color to the book and Beamer learns that even though his cousin is a bit zany and country living can be a little crazy, they can both be pretty great.
“Bash and the Pirate Pig” offers a lot of opportunity to talk to your children. With all the comical (but sometimes foolish) situations the boys find themselves in, you can talk about good and bad choices. When Bash introduces Beamer to the “Fishin’ and Farmin’ book”, it’s a great way to talk more about the bible and about some of the stories in it – many of which are about…you guessed it…fishing and farming. You can laugh together about the boys’ crazy antics, like riding cows to the diary stand to get ice cream and trying to make all their animals float on handmade boats. And we certainly had fun saying “Guliver J. McFredrick the Third” over and over. You’ll have to read it to find out more about old Gully.
