soundtrack of our lives :: disney music review and giveaway

newWDRlogoHave you ever been walking through the grocery store and caught yourself not only singing but dancing along to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song? (That is a darn catchy little tune, isn’t it?)

Or maybe just as you’re taking your seat at a restaurant you hear two completely unrelated sounds that could be the first two notes of a song and you kinda-sorta expect people to start popping up from various parts of the set (yes, now I’m saying my life -in my head- is like living on a set) to make the next few sounds by clinking their glass or sliding a chair across the floor right before a chorus of people burst out of the kitchen singing a Broadway-worthy rendition of “Be Our Guest” in twelve-part harmony? No? Just me?

Okay, well at least tell me that you’ve seen your kids playing together so nicely after a day full of bickering and fighting and started quietly singing, “When you’re the best of friends…having so much fun together…” And get a little teary? Still nothing?

Please tell me that you at least got a lump in your throat when Jessie looks out from under the bed, sad and dejected, at the girls – HER girl, HER Emily – playing with nail polish without even noticing Jessie had slipped away under the bed. Tell me you weren’t at least close to doing the ugly cry by the time Jessie looks out the side of the donation box. Gah! Now I’m crying!

I’ve lost count of the number of times a Disney song has brought me to tears. Sometimes happy tears, sometimes it’s just memories that bubble right up to your eyes and run down your cheeks. I remember when The Disney Channel first came through on satellite TV back in the ’80s and we’d go up to my grandparent’s house to watch. My brother and I would take turns sitting on the little blue stool while we watched cartoons like the one where Goofy tries to learn how to play baseball or fly a plane. (I love that I’ve been able to find those same cartoons and watch my kids laugh at them like Richard and I used to.) Oh! I can’t forget about The Three Little Pigs singing, “Who’s afraid of the big, bad wolf. Big, bad wolf. Big, bad wolf.” And, oh! oh! I remember tapping my toes with the music in “The Country Bear Jamboree”, snuggled up with my Granddaddy all those years ago. And I remember my children snuggling up with my dad just a few years ago to watch the same show. Gosh! So many memories, so little time.

As you can see, so many of my memories are tied to Disney songs and I was thrilled when I had the chance to tell you all about the new Disney Classics box set, which has 4 discs with 94 original recordings: Disney Modern Classics (including songs like Under the Sea from The Little Mermaid and Happy Working Song from Enchanted), Disney Theme Park Classics (with theme songs for some of your favorite part attractions like Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Pirates of the Caribbean, and – of course – it’s a small world), Disney Timeless Classics (with songs such as When You Wish Upon a Star and A Spoonful of Sugar), and Disney Television Classics (which has songs ranging from the good old Mickey Mouse March to the Hot Dog! song you hear on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse today as well as from shows such as Lizzie McGuire, Kim Possible, and Duck Tales). I’m telling you. You’ll look through this list of songs and think, “OH! Remember when…” and “I used to LOVE that song when I was little!”
