a simple diy :: fall air fresheners

One of my absolute favorite parts about fall are all the smells. Crisp fall leaves. Baked apples. Pumpkin everything! They almost make up for the fact that the colder fall weather has me packing away my flip flops  😥

If you love those fall smells as much as I do, here is a SIMPLE DIY that adds a little extra fun fall decorating while giving you some of those favorite fall smells throughout your house. Not only is this very easy to make, but they make for great little fall gifts and are a great alternative to burning candles.

 
what you’ll need :: 

• glass jars — you can use a simple little jelly jar or go with something a little more seasonal. I got my pumpkin shaped jars at our craft store in the candle making area.
• spray paint {optional} — if you want to add some color to your jars, you can easily do so with some spray paint. We used a mix of orange glitter spray, orange and black.
• baking soda
• essential oils or scents
• fabric or burlap
• ribbon

 

let’s get started ::

1. Clean your jars and dry completely. If you’re going to add some spray paint color to them, set up shop in a well-ventilated area and follow the steps on your spray paint. Allow time to dry in between coats and add as many coats as you feel necessary for your desired look. We used the orange glitter spray and orange spray on one pumpkin and did a combination of the orange glitter spray and black spray paint on a second pumpkin.
2. Once completely dry, add 1/2 – 1 cup of baking soda to your jar. (Amounts will vary depending on the size of your jar.)
3. Add 10-15 drops of essential oils or scents to your jar. (Again, amounts will vary depending on the size of your jar and desired scent.)
4. Cut a square of fabric or burlap to be just a bit bigger than your jar opening. You’ll want it to cover the top of your jar and slightly overlap it so it can be tied on. Place the fabric over the top of your jar. We used a rubber band to hold our burlap square in place.
   *note: If your fabric is thicker, use a needle to poke some holes in the fabric to allow the scent to go through.
5. Tie a ribbon around the lip of your jar to hold the fabric in place and add some decorative touch (covering up the rubber band).
6. Give your jar a gentle shake to activate those oils and let the lovely smells out!  As you notice the smells dying out, give your jar a little shake or remove the fabric top and add a few more drops of scented oils.
