There are many people who put off visiting the dentist because they dread what they are going to be told. *raises her hand* Yup, that’s me. Do you do the same? One of the most common problems that adults face when visiting the dentist is gum disease. This disease affects nearly half of all adults, even those who have good hygiene habits. Did you know that? Is this something you are facing? In an effort to combat this pervasive problem, there are a variety of dental instruments available for at-home care. From toothbrushes and rinses to tongue scrapers and picks, could adding something as simple and seemingly superfluous as a tongue scraper to your oral routine really save your mouth?
Gingivitis, periodontitis, and gum disease are essentially the same thing. Gum disease is the highest contributing factor to oral problems. What is the best way to fight off this disease? Proper oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day is the minimum that each person should be doing in order to care for their teeth. Many adults fail to do even this. So be honest, where do you stand? I’ll be honest, I do brush twice a day but there are times I skip on the flossing. I know, it’s bad. Even people who religiously brush and floss their teeth can end up with gum disease, however.
This is because your mouth is basically a playground for bacteria. Awesome right? The foods and drinks you consume every day often contain ingredients such as sugar that contribute to bacteria buildup. While there are fiber-rich and calcium-rich foods that can help to keep your mouth healthier, clearing away the bacteria with toothpaste, mouthwash, and other means can also be a great idea to help with this bacteria problem.
Out of all of the products that are available you are probably asking, which should you be using? One dentist recommends one type of tool while a different dentist recommends another. Which is more effective? It’s often a good idea to take the advice of your own dentist. The absolute essential tools every person requires is a soft-bristled toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. A mouthwash can help to clear away bacteria on your gums and tongue. A gentle tongue scraping can also assist in stripping away harmful bacteria. Have you ever used a tongue scraper? While I have NOT used a tongue scrapper, I DO brush my tongue. I will definitely be adding this into my routine.
You don’t necessarily need to have an arsenal of oral products to rival your dentist’s office, but it’s important to realize the dangers that gum disease poses for the average mouth. After all, it could lead to teeth eventually falling out. If you are cleaning your mouth as recommended and visiting your dentist regularly for a checkup, you may be in the clear. However, it doesn’t hurt to give the bacteria some extra resistance with a mouthwash, tongue scraping, and teeth-friendly foods on top of a good brushing and flossing.
With all this great information, what is your routine while brushing? Do you do all of these? If not, is this something you think you might start doing. Talk to me…

May 21, 2016 at 8:32 pmI always took good care of my teeth when I was younger and my brother barely brushed his teeth and he barely had any cavities! I don’t go to the dentist as often but now I use mouthwash, my toothbrush, and some floss daily but want to add the tongue scraper if it does helps my oral health.

March 22, 2016 at 11:12 amI have always had trouble with my teeth since I was a little girl. I do all of the above and still ended up with gum disease. Now my uncle brushed his teeth with baking soda and never had a cavity his whole life.
