a captain for Laura Rose :: review + giveaway

disclaimer giveaway
My mom has always said that was born in the wrong era. As a little girl I never pretended I was a princess… I wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder skipping on the banks of Plumb Creek. For Christmas one year, my parents even gave me a tin cup, a penny and a peppermint stick in my stocking (if you’ve read the Little House series you’ll know what I mean). I could not have been happier with that little stocking, even if my sister’s stocking was packed with little goodies.

A Captain for Laura RosePerhaps this deep love of history has given me a greater appreciation for historical fiction. When I had the opportunity to review A Captain for Laura Rose by Stephanie Grace Whiteson, I dove in with great enthusiasm. I was not disappointed! While writing this adventurous story, Stephanie was working on her masters in history so this story is very historically accurate.

As you read A Captain for Laura Rose, you are transported to another time and another place. I could picture myself floating down the Missouri river and imagine what it might have been like to be a woman in a man’s world. You will find yourself cheering for the outgoing Laura Rose and not able to put the book down as you try to find out what happens next!

If you are like me, you will want to read A Captain for Laura Rose by Stephanie Grace Whitson. It has it all… love, excitement, history and faith – all of the ingredients for a great novel!

About “A Captain for Laura Rose”

Laura Rose White’s late father taught her everything he knew about piloting a Missouri River steamboat. He even named their boat after her. Despite that, it seems that Laura will forever be a “cub pilot” to her brother Joe, because in 1867, a female riverboat captain is unheard of. That is, until tragedy strikes and Laura must make the two month journey from St. Louis to Fort Benton and back in order to save her family’s legacy, her home, and the only life she’s ever known.

The only way for her to overcome the nearly insurmountable odds is with the help of her brother’s disreputable friend Finn MacKnight, a skilled pilot with a terrible reputation. Laura loathes having to accept MacKnight as her co-pilot, especially when she learns she must also provide passage for his two sisters. Straight-laced Fiona has a fear of water, and unpredictable Adele seems much too comfortable with the idea of life in the rough and tumble environment of the untamed river and the men who ply it. Though they are thrown together by necessity, this historic journey may lead Laura and the MacKnights to far more than they ever expected.

I am excited to read this new book by a new-to-me author.

As for your peppermint stick, did you lick it slowly to last all day like Mary, or crunch it after awhile like Laura? (I am a Laura Ingalls Wilder fan also!)

      I always wished I was a “Laura” but alas… I’m a Mary! I would definitely savor it! 🙂
