a simple DIY :: orange sugar scrub

I’m pretty much a minimalist when it comes to skin care.

Local raw honey to wash my face.

Coconut oil to moisturize.

Dr. Bronner’s to wash up everything else most of the time.

I buy a couple of select things for my hair and one for daytime moisture but still pretty low maintenance.

But I’m just like any other girl. I like to do something every once and a while to revive the senses and feel pampered 🙂

I just love body scrubs – especially ones that are castile soap (basically oil) based. You are so moisturized after them you don’t need to do anything else.

In the last year, I have seen so many versions of DIY sugar scrubs on Pinterest 🙂 So since this past spring, I started experimenting making my own using ingredients that I’m cool with my skin absorbing. Your skin absorbs 60 percent of what you put on it and rub into it. And you’ll love how your skin feels after this!

Give it a try! Come back and tell me what you think!

You’ll need:

1 cup pure cane sugar
1 cup sea salt
¼ cup coconut oil
¼ cup castor oil
2 TB olive oil
2 tsp orange essential oil

  1. Mix ingredients together and store in airtight container.

Tips:

  1. You could use refined table salt and sugar – I just don’t like how refined sugar is bleached out and don’t care for it on my skin. Read THIS to learn more.
  2. You could start out with less of any of the oils if you want and make sure it is the consistency YOU like. I don’t like mine too oily but I don’t like it so dry that it is too rough and sugary.
  3. Read THIS on how castor oil is beneficial to the skin – I know some of you may have cringed or wondered at that ingredient.
  4. This makes enough to last me a while – this would be a great amount to make and store in small jars for gift giving – I would say it could potentially make a good 3-4 small jars! How nice to give for the teacher gift, stocking stuffer, boss’ gift, or gift exchange! Just dress it up in a nice jar with some ribbon and a label!
  5. This is a perfect gift for a pregnant friend or a new Mama! Completely safe to absorb in their skin while pregnant or nursing…and a great reminder to her to take a 5 minute shower break 😉
  6. I store my sugar scrub in an old container that used to have sugar scrub in it!

YOUR TURN!

Are you a skin care minimalist?! Do you love pampering with this kind of stuff? Let me know if you end up trying out making your own and what you think!

I use castor oil for soap making because it makes for really nice sudsy soap, but I would never have imagined it had so many tangible n=benefits in and of itself. I’m definitely going to rethink some of my soaping recipes now that I know this.

Hi Ada! I am definitely not a soaping expert – at all! I did know about the benefits of the castor oil though which is why its in there – i didn’t know it was a good natural sudser! That is so good to know. So many soaps are so hard to get natural with suds 🙂
