Happy Thanksgiving week! You may be reading this post as you take a quick break from preparing for Thanksgiving festivities. My family is actually doing something different this year. We are road tripping it to southern California to visit the Great Wolf Lodge. We had FRIENDSGIVING on Saturday instead. It was my first time hosting Thanksgiving and making a turkey. It all was as lovely as I hoped. My best friend since 1st grade recently moved to the Bay Area and it was an absolute delight to have her join us. We also invited a sweet couple that we work with. It was a wonderful time together. I’m thankful for the beautiful people God has put in our lives.
Now for some Thanksgiving posts you don’t want to miss…
Mashed Potatoes
A popular holiday post on the blog is this mashed potato recipe. You still have time to try it for Thanksgiving 2019 or pin it for your next holiday gathering.
What goes with nearly every dish? Mashed potatoes! I’m going to give you the super-sized potluck recipe I make, but you can scale it down to feed your family on any ol’ night of the week.
Bonus points for this recipe:
- make a day or two ahead of time
- garlic or regular, you decide
- reheat well if you have any leftovers
- heat, transport, and/or serve from your crockpot
A frugal shopping tip: I buy all my ingredients at Costco when I’m making a mass quantity because I can get a 20 lb. bag of potatoes, butter, and a tub of sour cream for about $15 and it will feed about 30 people really yummy mashed potaters.
Whipped Mashed Potatoes – serves 15 (one filled crockpot)
7 Tips for a Low-Stress Thanksgiving
Carinn shared this post with 7 Tips for a low-stress Thanksgiving. It is slightly redundant with her first tip being the mashed potato recipe I just spoke about. All the Simple moms are on to this easy recipe!
Here’s a sample of her tips, but go read all 7!
5) Buy from the Baker: some of my favorite pieces of Thanksgiving are the pies and rolls. Mmmmm…. carbs and sugar. Anyway, while I could try to make these delicious items I prefer to trust the experts and just purchase the most delicious pies and rolls I can find.
This next tip is for those who like to have fun with their food. These turkey pops are cute and easy to make. So buy the baked goods you don’t want to spend time on and have fun with the kids making fun food.
Turkey Pops

- Dip cake pops into melted candy melts
- Place in freezer until cool and dry
- Using chocolate icing as glue, stick candy corn into the top of the cake pop to create feathers
