As my girls are getting older we are able to move onto more “brainy” music selections. As much as everyone loves listening to Wheels on the Bus on endless repeat (<— Yes, that would be EXTREME sarcasm as I’m sure Wheels on the Bus makes parents everywhere cringe) I enjoy it more when we can mix up our musical selections with tiny learning lessons.
The newest release from Dog on Fleas, Buy One Get One Flea, is a fun mix of catchy tunes that have those tiny learning lessons mixed in. From start to finish my girls wanted me to read them every song title and then we frequently had to pause the album on our first listen so they could ask questions about the words they heard. Here’s a few of our conversations in the car today as we listened…
“Mom, what is a palindrome?” :: “A word or phrase that is spelled the same way backwards as it is forward.”
“What is a ruse?” :: “A trick.”
“Like when someone says ‘Look up there!’ and there’s nothing there?” :: “Exactly.”
“What is a hundredaire?” :: “Someone who has hundreds of dollars.” (Which is like MEGA rich to a kid.)
“What is a herring’s head?” :: “A herring is a fish. So a fish’s head.”
It was fun for us all as I got a chance to explain some pretty basic concepts to my girls in a fun way, and they really enjoyed listening to the songs that went with all these questions, “Palindrome,” “It’s a Ruse,” “Hundredaires,” and “Herring’s Head.” They continued to rock on for the rest of the album and were even able to pick up on some of the jokes included in the tracks (hearing my 4-year-old giggling at some of the play on names jokes from “High School Reunion” was awesome).
If you’re looking for a fun album that your kids (and you) can easily sing along with Buy One Get One Flea is a great addition to your musical library. I’ve already packed our copy back into my “return to car” bag so they can listen tomorrow morning as we run errands.
