You all know that I LOVE music and think that music is an integral part of teaching our children. Music has a way of getting into your soul and sticking in your head. It’s a perfect way to teach positive values and ideals to children.
One thing that I am successfully instilling in my daughter is a love of our natural world. I am a tree-hugging flower child at heart, so it’s inevitable that my love of nature will rub off on her. She loves to play in dirt, collect rocks and acorn caps and pine cones, smell flowers, literally hugs and kisses trees, and is fascinated with animals of all shapes and sizes. She LOVES fruits and vegetables – she eats tomatoes straight from the vine in our garden, and she even made herself a little hiding place in the middle of the tomato plants last summer. She is my little nature girl, and I feel so blessed.
I want to encourage and enhance her appreciation for nature, and one of the ways I can do that when we can’t be outside because of inclement weather is through music.
One of our favorite albums in our rotation has been Delicious by Orange Sherbet, which is jazzy and fun album all about eating local foods. Eating local is a great way to provide your family with fresh, unprocessed, most-times organic foods. This practice also reduces carbon emissions and supports your local economy. Read my review of Delicious here.
We also love the Celebrate Earth series from Recess Music. There are 5 albums that are all dedicated to our dear Mother Earth (and the stars that surround her). Please read my review of Celebrate Earth, Growing Veggie Soup, Ocean Motion & Wild Child here, and my review of La Bella Stella here.
Another of our favorite CDs is Alison Faith Levy’s World of Wonder because it celebrates the wonders of nature through a child’s eyes. Read that review here.
And finally, you might remember my review of Milkshake’s Got a Minute? album, which has 2 awesome eco-friendly and Earth-loving songs: “Washing Machine” and “This is Our Earth.”
In celebration of Earth Day, I want to share these planet-loving albums by giving a set of them away here on The Simple Moms! A huge thank you to Recess Music, Orange Sherbet, Milkshake and Alison Faith Levy for graciously agreeing to share the love for Mama Earth, and to my dear friend Elizabeth Waldman Frazier who made this collaboration possible!
