It’s National Bubble Week and there’s nothing that screams “outdoor fun” more than bubbles!
With three kids who love blowing bubbles on warm days, I quickly realized that we go through a lot of bubble solution! Let’s face it, someone’s bound to dump their bottle of bubble solution as they are chasing after their own bubbles.
So, after playing around with some different homemade bubble solution, we finally found one that we really like. The kids love it because they get to create giant bubbles and I like it because it’s simple and inexpensive to make!
Homemade Giant Bubble Solution
Ingredients ::
- 6 cups water
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup original Dawn liquid dish detergent (the blue kind)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon glycerine
Instructions ::
1. Dissolve the cornstarch in the water, mixing well so it doesn’t get clumpy.
2. Gently stir in the dish detergent, baking powder, and glycerine.
3. Set mix aside for about an hour before using. This will help to create really great bubbles.
*mix gently again before use if the ingredients have settled to the bottom of your container*
Of course you can always double or triple the recipe to make even more bubble solution! But we tend to make it as we need it so the excess solution isn’t just sitting around. We’ve noticed that the older solution doesn’t work quite as well. And, because it’s easy to mix up, we just do it before breakfast or before lunch and let it sit for the hour while we eat and then go out to make some bubble!
TIP: We mix ours up in a plastic dish tub because we are using large homemade bubble wands (see below).
More bubble fun!
Because the giant bubble solution is just part of the fun, here are four additional ways we’ve collected from around the internet to make National Bubble Week (or any time) even more fun:
1. Giant Bubble Wands
Using some drinking straws and yarn, you can create your own giant bubble “wand”. For each wand, you will need two drinking straws (the non-flexi kind) and about 7 feet of yarn. Thread the yarn through each straw and tie the two ends of the thread together. Dip it into your bubble solution and go!
2. Bubble Refill Stations
Reuse empty detergent containers or beverage dispenser (you can find these at any store) as an easy way for kids to refill their individual bubble solution containers. Get the full scoop on the Bubble Refill Station from Gwenny Penny.
3. Don’t let them pop!
Of course kids love to chase and pop bubbles but what if they could “juggle” or bounce the bubbles without the bubbles popping? This will blow their minds! Slip a clean glove or sock on their hands and they’ll be able to bounce the bubbles without them popping right away!
This is great because it gives us a way to use all of those random single socks that have lost their match in the laundry!
4. The biggest bubbles of all!
Ever wanted to put your kids inside a bubble? Now you can! And they’ll love it! OneCharmingParty.com has all the details but all you need is a kiddie pool, hula-hoop, and a lot of bubble solution. Oh, and some willing kids to get in the middle!
