A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be one of the first to see “Moms’ Night Out,” a laugh out loud comedy about life in the hood….the mamahood, that is. And I am so excited that I get to tell you firsthand about how amazingly funny and honest it is. I am not lying when I say that I laughed and I cried…and sometimes I did both at the same time. This movie felt like my life written for the big screen. All of the highs and lows I have been through as a mom….the joy, the fear, the frustration, the overwhelmingness of it all, was perfectly summed up in this movie. I can’t wait to see it again. And, frankly, I can’t wait to watch it with my husband so that he might finally be able to understand my roller coaster of emotions in a way I can’t explain myself. Here is a brief synopsis to give you an idea of the premise:
“All Allyson and her friends want is a peaceful, grown-up evening of dinner and conversation . . . a long-needed moms’ night out. But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a paper bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for three hours—what could go wrong? MOMS’ NIGHT OUT is an endearing true-to-life family comedy that celebrates the beautiful mess called parenting.”
“Moms’ Night Out” is chock full of big names and big personalities: Trace Adkins, Patricia Heaton, Sarah Drew, and Sean Astin, just to name a few. But that is not what makes this movie great. What makes this movie great is its truth, its heart, and its ability to see into the heart of every mom who has ever wondered if they are doing it right even 1% of the time. Every big name in this movie chucked it all and gave every ounce of him or herself to give an honest portrayal of parenthood. There are so many scenes and quotes I want to share with you because the writers and actors in this movie hit the nail on the head over and over again. But since I can’t do that, I will share one of my favorites. One that gets to the heart of it all:
“Life isn’t about a parking space. It’s not about God taking all our problems away and giving us a perfect life. It’s about finding meaning and joy and purpose. In this -in the crazy- in the chaos.”
Like I said, nail on the head. Now here is the trailer. It is three minutes long and will leave you wanting to reserve your ticket immediately (which you absolutely can by clicking here).
So now that you are as excited as I am for opening night of Moms’ Night out (Mother’s Day Weekend….May 9!!), let me leave you a line from the movie that has stayed with me since I left the theater. Now it has been a few weeks so pardon me if I don’t get it exactly right. Sean (the main dad in the movie) is talking to Allyson (the main mom…although aren’t we all??) and starts to say to her, “Your job is….”, and in typical mom/wife fashion, she interrupts by saying, “Hard. I know….Or were you going to say easy? My job is easy?” And he looks at her with complete clarity and says, “Your job is important.” Isn’t that all we want to hear on a daily basis? That all of the runny noses and dandelion bouquets and bedtime prayers all add up to something bigger than ourselves? That is what I took away from this movie. So do yourself a favor and go see for yourselves. It will make you realize that every decision, every mistake you have made as a mother adds up to something that is worth every tear and every regret you have had. It is not just a movie for moms. It is THE movie for moms (and the best part is, dads will love it too!).
