combat pregnancy nausea with this simple ginger cocktail recipe

Pregnancy nausea. Two words that should never have to be associated with each other! However, if you’re anything like me, those two words are the best of friends…or maybe I should say worst of enemies… Either way, for many of us expecting mommas, the sad truth during a time of so much joy, is that nausea is the reality we live in. For some of us, it’s here and there. For others, it’s every day of the first trimester. And for some moms {bless your dear souls} you are queasy every minute of your entire pregnancy. Sidebar: if you happen to be reading this and you have not experienced pregnancy nausea, count your lucky stars and know that you are so deeply envied!

Whatever level of nausea you have experienced, friends, let me tell you, I have been there, and it’s no picnic! That’s why today, on the very first day of my second trimester…of my fifth pregnancy {what?!?! Yeah…that’s a whole lot of hormones!}…I feel it is my motherly duty to share with you a simple yet effective recipe to help combat pregnancy nausea.

During each of my previous pregnancies, I searched endlessly for things to help settle my continually upset tummy. This time around, I have been determined to find something that helps, that is easy to make, and that I can stand the taste of for more than a day. A friend of mine suggested trying ginger beer {the non-alcoholic kind, just to be clear} from Trader Joe’s. I figured I didn’t have much to lose, so I bought myself a four pack, and guess what, they actually settled my tummy! It was amazing relief! However, the not-so-amazing part was that at about a buck a bottle, at the rate I was sipping on those lovely beverages, my wallet couldn’t handle this new remedy. Thus, I set out to make my own “ginger cocktail.”

The stuff from Trader Joe’s, I’m convinced, works so well, because it has actual ginger in it. You can see it floating throughout the bottle. The other part that makes it so wonderful is that it’s fizzy and light on a queasy stomach.

My recipe isn’t a copycat recipe by any stretch. It doesn’t taste like the ginger beer from Trader Joe’s, but it has similar components that make for a happy tummy.

Ingredients:

  • ½ tbsp. ginger root, freshly grated
  • 2 tbsp. honey {while the verdict is out on honey during pregnancy, use sugar or another sweetener of your choice, if you prefer}
  • the juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 can of citrus soda of your choosing

ginger cocktail
Directions:
Finely grate your ginger. I use the smallest grater I have, and this gives the drink a consistency of orange juice with some pulp. After grating the ginger, add your honey and lemon juice. Next, heat your mixture to release the flavor of the ginger. If you want to be technical, a slow simmer on the stove top is best, but if you’re like me, when you need a nausea remedy, you need it fast! This is where I pop the mixture in the microwave for about fifteen seconds. Last, take two tablespoons and add them to a glass along with a can of citrus soda and some ice. Enjoy! You should have approximately four tablespoons of your ginger/honey/lemon mixture. Simply refrigerate the extra and add to soda as needed.

Hopefully, this simple recipe helps you through some of your nausea woes! Growing a tiny human is hard work! Chin up momma! You are amazing!

Cheers to happy tummies and sweet babies! Please share, what are your go-to tips and tricks for combating nausea during pregnancy?

    I have never been pregnant before but I would think that Gingerale would be similar to this. I am glad to know something out there works for mothers to be.

      This is similar to gingerale, in flavor, but the major difference is that it has actual ginger root in it. Many ginger sodas are only ginger flavored, and don’t actually have ginger in them, which is the ingredient that makes it an effective nausea remedy. 🙂

    I love fresh ginger tea. I just slice up some ginger and simmer it for 15 minutes.
