I am a doodler by nature. If I’m in a meeting or on the phone, you can go ahead and bet on me to be drawing little designs up and down the margin. If nothing else, I bubble in all the letters that have spaces fit for bubbling. But after some 30(ish) years of doodling, my drawings all started to look the same and – quite honestly – looked a lot like something my children could draw. One day I was at the store to buy coloring books for my kids. I didn’t want just any coloring book, I wanted something that sparked creativity but didn’t limit it by having too many lines already drawn. I found exactly what I was looking for but behind the last book I picked up was a bright, vivid book that didn’t look as childish as the others. That book was Creative Doodling & Beyond and I thought, “Ya know, why not buy a coloring book for myself?” Once I got home and started really flipping through the pages, I found out that this wasn’t really a coloring book but a guidebook to help turn your doodles into beautiful works of art.
I had no idea that a) it would be so easy and b)I would love my doodles(artwork) so much. They’re actually really pretty, not just the same old tired button flowers and swishy letters I’ve been doing since 8th grade. Here are two of my favorite doodles (both based on techniques I learned in Creative Doodling & Beyond):
My daughter has even gotten in on the creative doodling fun and it’s one of my favorite things that we do together. Sometimes she draws her own and I draw my own. Sometimes I draw one and we both color it. Sometimes we each draw one and trade. No matter which way we do it, I love sharing those moments with her!
