A little over a week ago we were introduced to Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train series with the coming release Eggstravaganza. Since then my two girls have become Dinosaur Train super fans and 4-year-old Michaela has even memorized the theme song at the beginning. You know it’s some serious preschooler love when the song gets memorized.
If you’re not familiar with the Dinosaur Train series on PBS Kids then you too are missing out. This fun animated show is not only entertaining, it’s educational. The show centers around the the adventures of Buddy, a Tyrannosaurus Rex and his adoptive Pteranodon family. Buddy is learning about how all the dinosaur species are different but still are dinosaurs by traveling on the Dinosaur Train to visit the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous time periods and the dinosaurs that can be found there-in. The Train’s Conductor provides Buddy and his siblings with cool facts about the other dinosaurs along the way.
With Dr. Scott the Paleontologist sharing the most current scientific theories regarding the specified dinosaur species being shared from each episode, Dinosaur Train really does a great job of delivering information to the preschool crowd about their beloved dinosaurs. Dr. Scott will also show kids some examples of currently living animals that have some similar characteristics to what they know, or think they know, about the specific dinosaur species they learned about on the Dinosaur Train that episode.
My husband and I both appreciated that Dr. Scott explains that “this is what scientists believe” about the dinosaur species that was discussed on the Dinosaur Train instead coming across as knowing exactly what a dinosaur used a specific body part for, or what their social habits were. Basically, a good portrayal of what Scientific Theory is and how it works on a level that’s geared for the 2-5 year old crowd.
