I have played softball since before I can remember. My daughter has followed in my footsteps and is currently in her third season. I created a DIY Home Plate Door Hanger to show our team spirit and all the ladies asked why I didn’t make a softball one? I was perplexed and wasn’t sure what they were referring to until they said if you make one for softball we want one. Then, it dawned on me the balls are a neon yellow, back-in-the-day balls were white! This door hanger is super easy whether you want baseball or softball the process is the same and they end up approximately 15.5” x 16”.
Materials:
- Disassembled pallet
- Miter Saw
- Sander
- Finishing nails
- Acrylic paint: red, white/neon yellow and black
- Paintbrushes a writer and large flat brush
- Hanging wire
- Eye hooks
- Sealant
Step 1: First if you are recycling a pallet you will have to disassemble it before you begin. Once it is disassembled I began by cutting the boards the lengths I wanted. Start with the two center boards to determine how long you want them. Approximately they were 15.5″ in length.
Step 2: Then using the miter saw cut the 45 degree angles on all your boards. I measured by using the tip of the previous board. This helped me more than measuring because you can line the wood up with the saw blade (refer to the picture). It’s also helpful for me to use the 45 on the left side since I am right handed and I just flip the boards accordingly.
Step 3: Once you have cut all your boards use a sander to sand down any rough edges. If you don’t have a sander then sandpaper will do just fine.
Step 4: The last two pieces of wood you cut will be used to secure the pallet pieces together. Line your pieces up so that you can nail it to these two strips of wood (they should cover the length of all the boards like in the picture).
Step 5: I had to flip my plate over and nail from the front because my wooden slats were too thin for my finishing nails. You shouldn’t have to worry about this step it you are using a traditional size pallet.
Step 6: Now you can paint your base either white or neon yellow. I decided to make a softball home plate door hanger this time for my daughter.
Step 7: I chose to paint my red thread by trying to make it even at the top and bottom. This is a great time to sketch in your word HOME in the script you choose. Once you finish painting the thread you can paint the word HOME.
Step 8: Once the door hanger is dry flip it over and screw in the eye hooks where you want the wire to go. Last secure your wire and finish off your door hanger with a bow if you choose. Make sure to seal your pallet.
