It’s winter here in Michigan. Some days that means snowmen and sledding. Some days (like today, when the temperature is a chilly 9 degrees), we opt for inside fun. That includes making some quick and easy homemade scented play dough.
While I initially made the play dough for my 3-year-old, my older kids were enticed my the yummy cherry smell. My nine-year-old daughter and her friend made a “bake shop” with play dough–cookies, cupcakes, braided challah bread. My three year old kept himself busy with cookie cutters and a rolling pin. I love anything that will keep my kids busy for a while on a cold day when I have a long to-do list to get through!
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 envelope Kool-Aid (whatever color you want)
2 tsp. cream of tartar (found in the spice aisle)
1 cup water
1 T oil (I used canola)
Directions:
Mix first 4 ingredients in medium saucepan. Don’t be alarmed that the mixture looks pretty white when you have it mixed. Add the water and oil (you’ll see a much brighter color now) and stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until a soft ball of dough has formed. The color will brighten up as it cooks. Allow to cool and play! In the winter, we love to play with the dough when it’s still a little warm. Not only does this smell yummy, it keeps well just stored in a plastic sandwich bag and doesn’t dry out quickly at all!

January 19, 2016 at 8:48 amIt is so simple, Maryann. I didn’t have a Kool Aid packet or Cream of Tartar at home, so I had to run out to pick those things up but we’ve now made 3 batches and the kids LOVE it!
