A few years ago I was one of several staff photographers at a multi-day event. It wasn’t like I was always on for the entire time, but if I wasn’t hiding in my hotel room I had my camera in hand (and usually my camera bag as well). Even in the break room, I wasn’t comfortable just leaving my camera sitting around. By the time the weekend was over, I had a terrible strain in my neck. It was so bad that I ended up going to a massage therapist to help get rid of the giant knot that just wouldn’t relax. It happened again at a wedding that I photographed a few weeks later. But recently I was able to try out the Cotton Carrier Carry-Lite holster, which has helped tremendously with those long-term, high-demand scenarios when you want to be super careful not to miss the shot!
The Carry-Lite is what I’d call a tool belt for photographers. Not only does it provide a good way to be hands-free when you need to be, the belt is sturdy enough to have several things clipped onto it (like your cell phone or flash, if you have a case for those that can attach).
Start by attaching the “hub” to the bottom of your camera where you would normally attach your tripod mount. (This hub piece is compatible with many quick release tripod systems). Once the hub is securely attached, you clip on the belt. This is a sturdy but comfortable belt that is easily adjusted and it has a reinforced buckle. It took me a few minutes to understand exactly how the carrier worked. Start by placing your camera sideways (lens pointing behind you) and slip the hub into the receptacle. Once you’re sure that it’s in the correct spot, twist downwards and it will lock into place. I did find that that, at first, I felt a little clumsy trying to attach and then detach my camera from the hook, but after a few minutes of practice it was much easier. And don’t worry! If you happen to somehow miss your mark, there’s a backup safety tether. I was worried that the tether was going to be in my way but it never was.The Cotton Carrier Carry-Lite is a reasonably price and well-made system. The Carry-Lite is less cumbersome than a carrier vest but still provides a secure place to rest your camera while still leaving ample room to attach any other little gadgets you might need.

July 13, 2014 at 4:48 amHi Bridget,
I know exactly the knot you’re talking about. Spent a few recent weekends shooting with my messenger bag style camera bag, and that spot where the shoulder strap was weighing down has a knot that just won’t go away. I’ve been slowly transitioning myself over to the Cotton Carrier Vest. Big fan of Lowepro’s stuff, so picking up some of their belt system bags to attach to the Cotton Carrier Vest’s side belts.
Came across your post about that knot and while I feel a bit geeky with what looks like a black tactical vest on, I think my neck, back, and other knotted up muscle regions will thank me in the long run. Thanks for reminding me why I’m spending the time to transition my camera gear carrying system over from messenger bags to the Cotton Carrier. Before the messenger bags, I had a backpack style system, but the massive weight of it caused lower back pains. Especially when trying to extract gear from it.
A twisted journey, for sure.
Wing.
