Fall is here. The season of changing colors, pumpkin spice everything and, not to be forgotten, flu, colds and ear infections. When my kids are sick, one of the things that helps me decide if they go to school or stay home—or if we need to make a trip to the doctor—is if they have a fever. But the problem then is that I have to actually take their temperature.

We don’t use the word “hate” at our house, but I will say that my kids strongly dislike having their temperature taken. And I’m reluctant, at best, to take their temperatures. For several years we used an ear thermometer. But I found the readings to be varied in accuracy. Sometimes it seems pretty accurate. Sometimes it’s totally off. I’m sure it has to do with the placement of the thermometer, but when I’m dealing with a squirmy kid, there’s only so much “placement” I can really do. And using an ear thermometer on a baby with an ear infection seems pretty cruel. I often found myself calling the doctor completely unable to answer their first question “Does he have a fever?”

Thankfully this fall I am equipped with a new tool in my mommy arsenal—the Exergen Smart Glow Temporal Scan Thermometer. No need to insert a thermometer into the ear, mouth or {ahem} any other body part. You simply scan the thermometer across the forehead for an accurate reading in a few seconds. And because it’s quick and painless, you can even get an accurate reading on a sleeping child.

The Exergen Temporal Scan Thermometer works by reading the temperature of the temporal artery over the head. And what makes Exergen more accurate than any other temporal scan thermometer is their patented AHB software that measures the ambient temperature and synthesizes that as a separate reading to the body temperature—basically taking into account the temperature of the room and making sure that doesn’t alter the reading. I tested the accuracy of the thermometer on everyone in my family.

Of course I’m still hopeful that we’ll make it through fall without getting sick, but if I do have to use a thermometer, I am thrilled to be able to use one without a fight.
