We listen to a lot of children’s music around here. My husband and I each have a widely varied musical taste and our kids are quickly developing these same tendencies.
I know when an album has been kid-approved when the artist is known by name and repeatedly requested as our car traveling music. Farmer Jason and Buddies, Nature Jams has received double stamps of approval from my girls and is a definite hit.
Farmer Jason is the brainchild of rock music legend Jason Ringenberg of Jason and the Scorchers. An Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Ringenberg is one of the pioneers of the modern Americana and alt-country genres. In 2002 he created Farmer Jason to educate and entertain children about farm life and the wonders of nature. The character is based on his own farming background and love of the great outdoors.
Each track (on Nature Jams) has guest star artists singing duets about nature subjects and outdoor activities like whale watching, ice skating, hiking, and spelunking. Included in the album package are 16 songs, 18 guest artists, a 20-page illustrated booklet, and a bonus DVD with 4 new videos. “The central goal of the record is to inspire and motivate children to get outdoors and experience nature firsthand,” says Jason. “I get more satisfaction when that happens than from any award or sold-out show.”
With the guest star list ranging from Steve Gorman of the Black Crowes to Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick, or from indie folk darling Brandi Carlile to banjo virtuoso Alison Brown, it’s no wonder that each track on this album ranges widely in style. You’ll find everything from Celtic rock to pure folk music on Nature Jams.
