FiLIP2 :: the worry-free wearable phone for kids :: review

I am a FiLIP 2 Blogger Ambassador. This post is part of a sponsored campaign. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.

filipMy kids aren’t ready for smart phones yet. But my two oldest children do spend a lot of time away from me. From sports practices to play dates, my kids aren’t always under my supervision. And I like knowing that they can call me if there is an emergency. Or I can send them a message if I’m running late. FiLIP 2 has made it possible for my child to have those abilities without having access to the internet or social media.

007With the FiLIP2, you designate five phone numbers your child can call. Those are also the only numbers that can call your child—so no need to worry about spam. And your child can receive text messages from those numbers as well, but can’t send them. No need to start that habit already!

One of my favorite features of the FiLIP 2 is the super-accurate locater. FiLIP 2 uses GPS, cell tower and Wi-Fi to accurately locate your child. And with a handy smartphone app, you can track your child’s location on your phone. You’ll know she got home from school, safely biked to her friend’s house or is on her way home with the carpool from dance. You can also set “safe zones” for your child and be notified anytime your child leaves a safe zone.

020In the event of an emergency, your child holds down the red button for three seconds and the FiLIP 2 automatically calls each phone number in the phone until a connection is made. The phone call and background noise is recorded and you receive a notification of your child’s location every 60 seconds. This is one of those features I hope never gets used, but it still gives me peace of mind knowing that it’s there.

FiLIP 2 is a smartwatch system. A bit bulkier than a typical wristwatch, the FiLIP 2 comes in Superhero Blue and Watermelon Red, and can be easily changed to Limesicle Green or Awesome Orange with the purchase of an accessory wristband. So if your child likes her accessories to match her outfit, you’re in luck.  And FiLIP has a special offer just for our readers–a free FiLIP 2 wristband accessory with purchase!  The first 100 readers to purchase a FiLIP 2 will receive a free wristband accessory in Awesome Orange or Limesicle Green valued at $34!  To redeem your gift with purchase, go to http://webshop.myfilip.com, select Buy Now and then choose “Blog Post” when asked how you heard about FiLIP.  You will receive an email for your color preference and your free wristband accessory will be sent within 60 days.  Don’t forget:  Purchase FiLIP 2 through January 8 at the discounted price of $99.99 and save $50 (regular retail price $149.99)!

021Because FiLIP 2 is a watch, it is, by nature, a speaker phone.  This is the one tricky part about the phone.  On one hand, I love that it’s a speaker phone.  I can hear background noises, know if my child is alone or not and, in the event of an emergency, I might be able to infer more than he tells me.  However, this also makes is difficult to clearly hear your child if he is in a noisy situation.

FiLIP 2 is currently only available on the AT&T network. Initially I was worried about the cost of using AT&T for only the FiLIP since we have a contract with another provider for our smartphones. But the cost of a plan for just the FiLIP is only $10 per month—so we can keep our current smartphone provider and use AT&T for just the FiLIP without breaking the bank.

I love the extra peace of mind knowing my child can contact me in case of an emergency and my kids still think they’re pretty cool having a funky watch that doubles as a phone.
