food safety tips during covid-19

As a person that works in the healthcare field in a doctors office, I wanted to share a few tips that could help you or anyone else during this time.

At this point, you could go either way. You are are taking measures to the extreme or your aren’t doing much to keep germs and sickness out of your home.  For anyone, doing the five things below is the minimum at this point and would certainly be very helpful.

DO THE FIVE
Help stop coronavirus
1 . HANDS – Wash them often. Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub
2. ELBOW- Cough into it. Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze
3. FACE – Don’t touch it. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean
4. SPACE – Keep safe distance. Avoid close contact (6 feet) with people who are unwell
5. HOME – Stay if you can. Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if you feel unwell

It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days.

If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air. They quickly fall on floors or surfaces.  You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within 3 feet of a person who has COVID-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands.

You have to do what makes you comfortable at this point, if that means wearing a homemade mask to the grocery store or wiping down every part of the cart or not leaving your house, you have to do what you have to do to make yourself feel safe.

Whether you are taking precautions or not, I thought I would share this video about how to care for your groceries and be safe. What’s funny is, this doctor that made this video is someone I have worked with and trust. Take what you will from the video and incorporate
