My kiddos love to read. Our bookshelf is ever expanding with new books and we read a (kid-chosen) story to each of our little ones each night as part of their bedtime routine. We also go to the library at least once a week to find new favorites and try to have a “quiet time” as often as possible where our two older kids just sit and “read” (since they are both younger, mostly it involves them looking at the pictures and inventing their own stories that match what they are seeing). Our personal library is somewhat varied since my kids are each two years apart at ages 5, 3 and 1. But all three of my kids LOVE Matthew Van Fleet’s new book “Munch.”
Offered by Simon & Schuster, it features a wide range of furry (and not so furry) friends who smile, crunch and eat their way through this delightful book. It is perfect for both your preschooler and/or kindergartner and whispers and shouts all of the different ways animals can use their mouths. With its sturdy pages and hands-on textures, this super cute book has quickly become a family favorite. My kiddos love finding the hairy beard of the goat’s mouth and touching the soft fuzz of the bear’s snout. We even learned a few new animals along the way. (Did you know that a tamarin is a South American monkey with long teeth and even longer hair? Well, I didn’t!) Here is a short video that shows how Matthew Van Fleet comes up with the concepts that are shown in his books.
Now, we have read many a “lift the flap” and “pull the tab” book, and most of them have fairly short lifespans. But “Munch” has held up really really well despite three tiny sets of hands pulling and exploring and pulling and exploring some more. This is especially impressive since my one year-old also enjoys exploring with her mouth, as all tiny humans do. So even though the recommended age for this book is 2-6, my sweet baby girl snatches it up each time she sees it and looks through each page, as though truly reading it. Truth be told, this book is perfect for any hands-on kid that loves to touch, feel, and smile as they learn new words and pore over the distinctive characteristics of each illustration in this book. Your wee ones will love to read this unique book again and again (I know because mine have!!).
