I have never done a formal count but I am pretty sure we have about 73 princess books, movies, and CDs in our house (that’s not even counting the toys!). Each one tells the story of a beautiful lady who, through triumph and peril, emerges victorious with her prince. OK, they’re not all quite that dramatic. But you get the idea. And even though I love all of the traditional prince & princess tales, not one of them focuses on a little girl’s forever prince: God. Thank heavens for Sheila Walsh and her sweet devotional, appropriately titled “God’s Little Princess Bedtime Devotional,” brought to you by Thomas Nelson.
This devotional is pink and sparkly on the outside (it even has rhinestones on the cover!!) and faith-based on the inside. It is appropriate for any age — my 18-month old loves listening to me read it just as much as my 6-year old does. Each page has a short Bible story, a verse, and a section titled “Good-Night Giggles and Grace,” which has a short activity you can do with your little princess. Here is one of my favorites:
“Want to see how sparkles can light up the dark? Grab a flashlight and your most sparkly crown. Now turn off the lights. Shine your flashlight on your crown. See how the lights twinkle and dance? When you give others your love and kindness, you’re like a sparkling light in a dark world.”
The prayer that follows reads, “Dear God, You made the sun and moon so bright, And filled them with Your heavenly light. So like the stars in heaven above. I want to shine with Your pure love. Amen.”
