My little girl is growing up so fast. She recently graduated to a big girl bed, she knows her ABCs and can count to 20, and she is showing interest when I put on makeup in the morning. I’m convinced that next week she’ll start asking to go to the mall and want her own smart phone.
She recently noticed that my toenails were painted. She examined them, and then examined her own unpolished toes.I wanted to seize that moment to tell her that I’d paint her toes, but I really did not want to put adult nail polish on her. The thought of putting toxic chemicals on her fingers and toes was not appealing, especially since her fingers are in her mouth so often.
I thought back to my childhood when I had this peel-off nail polish, which I never liked because it didn’t stay put. I was an active tomboy who spent a ton of time in water, dirt and grass – and Lily is definitely following in my flower child footsteps.
So I started researching other alternatives, and came across Piggy Paint, which Simple Mom Shannon has reviewed in the past.
When our package came in the mail, I showed the colors to Lily and told her, “This is called Piggy Paint.” She grabbed one of the bottles and ran outside to her easel where she does her watercolors, fully ready to create a masterpiece with her new bottle of “paint.” I love her.
Since we love being outside, I laid a towel on the grass and told Lily I wanted to paint our toenails. She was fully entranced while I painted each tiny toe, and was very patient while letting them dry. I was so proud of this kid, I’m telling you. We had a great mommy-kiddo bonding moment, and she felt like such a big girl. I love having a daughter.
Piggy Paint is water-based, meaning it is non-toxic and “natural as mud.” It really stands up to active play – Lily and I have had our toes painted with Piggy Paint for a week, and we have zero chips. I really love this product and am ready to ditch all of my toxic adult nail polishes!
A couple notes about Piggy Paint:
- Ensure maximum dryness and chip resistance by using a hair dryer to dry polish for one minute with warm heat/low setting (for some extra fun while waiting for the polish to dry – sing 2 rounds of the ABC’s)!
- Make painting nails into a fun learning game (for example have a blue day and feature blue nail polish, then find other blue items in the home and throughout the day while running errands).

April 5, 2013 at 11:03 amI learned that other nail polishes, even kid friendly labeled ones, will dissolve a styrofoam plate. Knowing styrofoam will stand up for 100+ years this has me very worried and I’m glad I do not use polish on myself or my daughter. This would be a great way to spruce up her dresses though and give us the feeling of beauty. And my favorite color is Solar Power!
