I hope you are having a beautiful and safe holiday weekend as we celebrate the birthday of our great nation! Are you a tiny bit curious why you would have “the talk” with your kids this weekend? Kristen Bell is here to help us on this topic.
Ok, that was one of the funniest videos I saw this week. Not to get all serious, but I had melanoma skin cancer 3 years ago so I do have a huge passion about informing people about practicing safe sun activities. Please share this video as well. $1 for each share (up to 15,000) will be donated to the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation (CMPF) – a non-profit organization committed to preventing skin cancer, one child at a time.
My Story
Since I was in my late 20’s, I had less dangerous forms of skin cancer here and there. Sadly, even though I saw my dermatologist regularly, I didn’t have a clue about melanoma skin cancer. Long story short, a freckle on my chest appeared after I had my 3rd baby and I noticed it was irregularly shaped and 2 shades of brown. I don’t recommend being your own google doctor, but I looked up some things on the internet and I got scared…really scared! I immediately saw my dermatologist. They biopsied it to be safe, but really didn’t think it was going to be anything. However, just a week later I was very surprised to find out I had melanoma. Thankfully it was caught at an early stage. As a result of a freckle a little smaller then an eraser, I had to have surgery to remove all the skin around it. I have a 2 inch scar that reminds me to put on sunscreen every day! It’s crazy to stop and think that I could be a statistic and not even be here today if I didn’t go in and get my freckle checked out.
I most certainly had at least 2 painful sunburns as a kid. I think I can say I walked away from almost every 4th of July weekend with a lobster “tan”. My mom was very proactive about putting on my sunscreen and re-applying, but I am a pale girl! Thankfully, there are better sunscreens, cute rashguards, funky hats, and we have more knowledge about staying safe in the sun then we did when I was a kid. However, we need to do our part as parents and teach our kids good sun habits.
About Neutrogena
Neutrogena sent me this awesome stash of sunscreen to try out. Not only do I have myself to protect from the sun, but I have 3 precious kids who are statistically in danger of melanoma because of their mother. Thankfully they have their dad’s skin tone that doesn’t burn as badly as I do, but that DOES NOT mean they don’t need to be protected in the sun. I loved all the options Neutrogena has. The sport stick, that looks like deodorant, was great for application on their faces. Obviously you want precious baby skin protected with the pure & free baby formula. The ultra sheer liquid is great for layering under makeup and it’s water resistant for 80 minutes. The cool dry SPORT leaves you feeling cooler by helping the sweat evaporate away. So many options, but you should use your favorite sunscreen and cover up as much as possible too.
