Honey, Don’t Cough!

Safe. Natural. Effective. Has your child ever had a cough that just won’t quit? Are you unsure about using the OTC cough medicines for you child? I know I am a mother that is concerned with what is in the cough medicines that are in stores today and so was the family that founded Honey, Don’t Cough.

As parents of young children, Christine, a school teacher, and her husband Jeff, a family doctor, were concerned about the increasing reports regarding the dangers of children’s cold & cough medicines.

With the medical background that Jeff had he started researching the safety and effectiveness of the various over-the-counter products currently on pharmacy shelves. With his findings he was determined not to put their own children at risk by using these medications.

“In October 2007, the FDA Pediatric Advisory Committee reviewed all the relevant studies of children’s cough medicines, confirming Jeff’s personal research findings. The FDA committee unanimously decided that children under two should never be given over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, or antitussives. Furthermore, a majority of the committee recommended that these medicines should not be given to children under six, either.

Also as a medical assistant in a doctor’s office, it is nice to have an alternative to cough medicines. Also to know that your child will not be harmed with Honey, Don’t Cough.

My son doesn’t get sick to often, but the first time I used Honey, Don’t Cough was last year when my son had a terrible cough that I could not get rid of. I was given a free sample of this when Jeff dropped some off to our office to try out. I definately was glad I had grabbed a box of it. It helped my son so much when he had his cough. It was fantastic. I have never given my son cough medicine of any kind before, was kind of nervous to, but I am glad that I had the Honey, Don’t Cough to give to him.

Honey, Don’t Cough is made of 100% Buckwheat Honey. It is very safe and natural. Even researchers and physicians do not know exactly how Buckwheat Honey works to relieve cough, however some believe it is because of the following natural properties: Demulcent (throat soothing) effects. Powerful antioxidant properties of phenolics, peptides, organic acids, enzymes, Maillard reaction products, and possibly other minor components. Increased immune system cytokine release. Direct antimicrobial affects.
Most likely, Buckwheat Honey’s effectiveness is a combination of the above listed properties.

ABC News Medical Unit reported that a study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, found that children who received a small dose of buckwheat honey before bedtime slept better and coughed less than those who received either a common over-the-counter cough suppressant (dextromethorphan) or nothing at all.

The latest research published in the Journal Pediatrics, shows that over 500 children a year have had deaths associated with cough and cold medication.

An important thing to not about honey based products is that you should never give them to kids under 12 months.
