We are now in the ‘dog-days’ of Summer, you guys. Which always seemed like a funny term to me — Dog Days of Summer — because as blasted hot as it’s been these past few days, not even our dogs want to do anything! Which means we’re doing a whole lotta nothin’ during those peak hours of sunshine!
Well, I shouldn’t say we’re doing “nothing” because we are getting creative with some fun but low energy-exerted activities on those sizzling days!
We’ve done an obscene amount of coloring and crafts; played more board games that I can count; and watched more movies than I would like to admit. Even the kids have had enough.
So imagine their delight when these fun little boxes showed up at our door last week!
These are IncrediBuilds from Insight Editions! IncrediBuilds are free-standing wooden models that you assemble without the need for glue.
The pieces come laid out and labeled as a sheet of wood. You simply punch out the pieces as each step calls for them. {That part is important as you’re assembling your IncrediBuild!} As the pieces are slid or clicked into place, your model begins to take shape and holds itself together.
Once you’re finished, you can then customize your model with paints or markers (not included) or leave as is.
IncrediBuilds models include a variety of popular characters (including Star Wars, Captain America, and Finding Dory), a T-Rex, shark, butterfly, and the Eiffel Tower. Some kits, like the Star Wars Tie-Fighter, even includes a book that tells you more about the object (or animal) the IncrediBuilds is modeled after. My kids had just as much fun going through that book as they did building the actual Tie-Fighter model! Doubling the fun and time spent on this project!
It’s important to note that each IndrediBuilds comes with a Skill Level rating and age suggestion. For example, the Eiffel Tower model and the Tie-Fighter models that we put together are both rated as Advanced and suggested for ages 10+ and 12+, respectively. My girls, ages 8 and 10, were able to assemble both models but did require a little help from me. Some pieces are small and tricky to remove from the sheet (you really don’t want to break them) and it’s really, really important to follow each step of the directions to assemble correctly, something both of my girls figured out the hard way. Let’s just say, disassembling the models is not something you want to have to do.
The IncrediBuilds models took us about an hour to assemble, as I kept reminding the girls to take their time with them. And, once they were finished, my girls decided to leave them with their wooden look instead of painting them. The nice thing is that they can always opt to paint them at a later time….you know, on one of our upcoming “it’s too stinkin’ hot” days.
The IncrediBuilds kits can be found at stores like Barnes & Noble and Amazon starting around $14.99. Definitely well worth it, especially for those who like to put together models or are collectors. Also, I noticed some really fun additions to the IncrediBuilds line coming this fall on Amazon. More animals, more buildings, and more characters (including Zootopia!).
