LoriHenriques-CuriousPlaceWe are big music fans at my house. Rarely do we embark on a journey, whether it be down the street to Target or 500 miles south to visit Gramma Judi and Papa Bob, without turning on some tunes. As a family of five, our music tastes are somewhat eclectic. My hubby and I love sharing our favorite “grown up” songs with our little ones and often find our kids singing along to our favorite jams with us. And as all music lovers will attest, we are always looking to expand our horizons with a new favorite CD that the whole family can listen to and enjoy over and over again.

Such is the case with Lori Henriques’ newest release, entitled “The World is a Curious Place to Live.” After one listen, I already had requests from the peanut gallery for their favorites. Their top pick is “Dinosaur,” which tells of the innate awesomeness of the prehistoric creature so beloved by tiny tots everywhere. My favorite line goes, “Some have cautioned me that if you were still here/Getting along wouldn’t be so easy year after year/When I hear them say these things, they sound so flip/They say we’re better off in this long distance relationship.”

In “Crunchy Privilege,” Lori sings of her love for carrots, lauding their crunchiness and vowing to find one from her “very favorite farmer across the bridge.” My three-year-old insisted (literally INSISTED) that we go out and buy carrots after hearing this song. And halfway through a bite-sized baby carrot, he quoted the song by saying, “I love the way they crunch!” My personal favorite is “When I Look Into the Night Sky,” which has an amazing piano melody paired with lyrics that are both sweet and scholastic in nature. I will readily admit that I have listened to it many a time without my wee ones in the car. (Don’t tell them; they think it’s their CD.)

Lori’s music is witty, beautifully sung, and chock full of information geared towards little listening ears (and let’s face it, they are ALWAYS listening). And I am not afraid to say that I have learned more just from paying attention to the lyrics than I would have from flipping between PBS and the Discovery Channel in search of things to teach my kids. And it was way more fun. Available on iTunes or through her website, Lori Henriques’ latest offering is sure to charm the youngest or oldest listeners…..and probably even teach them a thing or two along the way.

There’s no age limit for the brilliantly whimsical lyrics and happily eclectic music that Lori Henriques creates! I’m in love with all of her work, and this new album is no exception! There will be a lot of delighted kiddos on my holiday list who will be singing these new songs by heart this year!
