Have you ever read Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet from Sleeping Bear Press? You may think that a hockey alphabet book would be an unusual choice for my family of two girls but you’d be wrong. Oh so wrong. You see, I have two hockey fans in my house. They just like to wear pink frills while they cheer their favorite teams.
It was no surprise to me when I let my oldest daughter pick a library book for herself for the first time that Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet was on the top of her little board book pile. Fast forward a few years and you can now enjoy another great installment of hockey-related learning from Sleeping Bear Press with their new book H is for Hockey.
With a new set of hockey alphabet descriptions and fun hockey and hockey history related illustrations this book has been a hit with both my little hockey fans. I’ve even enjoyed reading with them as I notice which hockey players seem to be depicted in some of the illustrations (for example the “W is for Wrist shot” hockey player has a pretty big resemblance to former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios).
Written by Kevin Shea and illustrated by Ken Dewar, H is for Hockey was a great fit for my 5-year-old daughter who wanted to read this 28-page boardbook for bed last night while she excitedly awaits the beginning of hockey season. If you too have a little hockey fan anxiously counting down the days until the season starts I think this would be a great book to add to your family library!
