My mind is one that wanders. And by “wanders”, I mean there is so much going on in there that focusing on one task seems nearly impossible. I try to call it “multi-tasking” but, really, it’s “half-tasking” at best. So when I found out about a meditation app that will help me feel clear-headed and calm and is made for beginners, I wanted to give it a try.
I hear a lot about the benefits of mindfulness and meditation (decreased stress, mood boosting, see many more benefits here) but, to me, it always seemed a new-age rage and one that didn’t fit in my busy life. In yoga, when my instructor says “Clear your mind. Don’t think about your to-do list or worries of the day”, I immediately think “Oh, now would be a great time to make a mental list of everything I need to get done today.” I’m honestly doing exactly the opposite of what I’m supposed to do. And as a busy mom, it’s hard for me to justify spending time doing seemingly nothing when I have so much to do! But “doing nothing” is when I expect to hear God –when I’m still enough to listen. A friend of mine described it this way: prayer is a time to talk to God, meditation is a time to listen.
www.omgmeditate.com guides me through my meditation with Lynne Goldberg, my personal meditation coach. She talks me through meditation using clear examples and practical tips. And it helps that she recommends we meditate for about 10 minutes a day. I can handle that! OMG I Can Meditate features daily meditation as well as many additional meditations including OMGood Night and OMGood Morning. In each meditation, Lynne walks me through steps to relax my body and relieve my mind of stress and tension. And her gentle reminders come just as my mind starts drifting to my to-do list. I never thought I would be one who would enjoy meditation. But as I’m trying several of the options in OMG I Can Meditate, I’ve found that meditation can help clear my mind so I can focus on my family instead of life’s little anxieties–the things that keep me distracted during the day and keep me up at night. Since I so frequently find myself unable to turn my mind off at the end of the day, insomnia hits. I’ve found that OMGood Night is a longer meditation that helps me relax so it’s easier to fall asleep. I’m still learning to slow down, but I have been impressed with how OMG I Can Meditate is helping me do just that.
