Sleeping Bear Press logoLately I’ve been trying to teach my first grader the importance of reading/listening to the entire set of directions before doing her school work. I have lost count of the times I have had to stress the importance to her of slowing down to pay attention so she doesn’t loose out just because she ends up not actually following the given instructions.

It just warms my heart and makes my day whenever we can find a book where the lesson learned by the main character is perfect to address a situation or learning opportunity we are experiencing in our lives. In this case Ozzie and the Art Contest from Sleeping Bear Press found us and that made it all that more seem like kismet.

Ozzie and the Art ContestIn Ozzie and the Art Contest, the main character is a puppy named Ozzie who just loves to draw. Ozzie is a wonderful and when his teacher, Miss Cattywhompus, announces the big upcoming Art Contest he immediately believes himself to be a shoe-in for the win.

Of course, it wouldn’t be that easy for Ozzie because he had a couple great lesson to learn. First, when your teacher tells you to carefully read and follow the directions you need to do just that. Secondly, being a ‘good sport’ isn’t just for people who have won to not rub it into the losers, being a good sport is also losing gracefully when you give it your absolute best shot.

Ozzie and the Art Contest is the picture book debut for Dana Sullivan and is based upon some of his own experiences with artistic disappointment.
