Last week my kids and I had fun with National Talk Like a Pirate after I took a quiz and found my pirate name would be Dread Pirate Rackham (sounds fearsome, doesn’t it?). As much as we enjoyed our day of “Arrrghs!” and “Mateys!” the language skills we need to work on developing are less swashbuckling and more along the lines of recessive and expressive.
To keep the fun of being pirates alive but integrating proper speech patterns we have been using Pirate Talk from Super Duper Publications to help my girls both work on their expressive and receptive language skills.

Now, the game is geared to help kids from Grades K & Up or Ages 4-10 work on their language skills. Pirate Talk targets seven essential communication skills – three receptive (Sentence Repetition, Answering Questions, and Following Directions) and four expressive (Categorizing, Inferencing, Describing, and Social Skills). The 150 color-coded cards are in five categories :: School, People, Home Community, and Activities.
While the game is intended for kids slightly older than my 3.5 year old daughter I was able to tailor our rounds of Pirate Talk to suit her particular language skills while still challenging her to work on some of those skills in a fun way. Instead of playing the game as it is outlined in the instructions, or using one of their included game variations, I made up my own to accommodate both my kids at the same time. They each had fun and didn’t have a competitive problem as I explained they were both being challenged equally just in a different way (targeting receptive language skills for my youngest and expressive skills for her almost 6 year old sister).
