Do any of you have slippery stairs or corners where you find your kids and pets frequently take a tumble? For us, it’s our unfinished basement steps. While our basement is great for play, getting up and down the stairs can be challenging–especially when I’m hauling laundry baskets and toys. And even more challenging for our old dogs.
It had gotten to the point where we were thinking that we might have to ban our dogs from the basement. It’s a great place to keep their food and water and a great place for them to hang out with the kids, but our older dog, Harley, is 14 and she was frequently slipping down the stairs. We really needed to find a solution–either no more basement or a way that she could get up and down the stairs without falling.
Thankfully Handi-Ramp, the company that started by making wheelchair ramps and more recently began manufacturing a large array of accessibility items has come up with Puppy Treads. Puppy Treads are a vinyl, non-slip material that can stick directly on to the surface you are applying it to. The textured surface is safe for paws and feet but provides just enough traction that dogs (and people!) can run up and down the steps without falling. I noticed a difference right away. Harley ran down the stairs without falling!
Puppy Treads are easy to install. They are self-adhesive and can be applied with no tools, though we found a rolling pin and easy way to smooth them out. While I put the Puppy Treads on my basement steps, because they are translucent, you could easily apply them to wood or stone surfaces and still see the original surface. My husband says “You can barely even see them!”

November 12, 2015 at 7:14 pmThese are wonderful! My mom has a very steep custom made staircase at her house that seemed great years ago, now, not so much. Her senior dog can’t use them and she’s always slipping. Even I’ve gone down a few times. I told her to get the adhesive carpeting but she didn’t want to take away from the look of the wood. Thus is perfect and I’ll have peace of mind, thank you!

November 12, 2015 at 12:36 pmI’m so excited to see this review! We have a long stairwell with wooden steps, and I’m constantly worried about my girls falling on the slick stairs. Did you notice if they made a significant difference for your kids? I don’t have pets but I’ve been looking for something similar to make our stairs safer for our girls.

November 12, 2015 at 2:45 pmYes! Before I wouldn’t let them go downstairs in just socks because the stairs are so slippery. Now it’s not a problem. The treads are textured enough that your feet almost stick to them (but they are not actually sticky, if that makes sense).
