On January 24th, DreamWorks Studios releases Real Steel on Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD! Set in the not-so-distant future where boxing has gone high-tech and 2000-pound steel robots have taken over the ring, this heart-warming story of a winning father-son team film stars Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, and Anthony Mackie. Bonus material includes behind-the-scenes features revealing the magic behind the sets and characters, Bloopers, and more!
Real Steel is a movie about a man, a boy and their robots. The man and boy are father and son, but just met.
For starters, let’s cover 3 of the main characters:
Dad is Charlie…as he is not called Dad 99.9% of the time – matter of fact not even once I believe.
Kid is Max.
Bot is Atom.
I thought this movie was excellent. I did not see it in theatres, but seeing it at home was just as cool. I have the Blu-ray and goodness was it awesome! I thought that it might be fun for my 5 year old to watch with me. However, I made the choice to watch it first (like I normally do when I’m just not sure) and I’m glad I did. We are very particular about what our kids watch for many reasons, but especially for “sass” and bad language. There was a few “bad” words in the movie and a few times those bad words came from Max. The other reason I don’t recommend under 13 to watch the movie is due to the violence. Going into the movie, know that it is about boxing robots. The opening scene is a robot “fighting” a bull. Sets the tone real well I would say. It is however the only time in the movie where robots fight animals. It is very appropriately rated in my opinion.
I LOVED the dancing and music in Real Steel. I found myself tapping my foot on more than one occasion throughout the movie. A very fun scene was when Max and Atom starting dancing to some music. Once they realized how cool it was with Atom “shadowing”, at each of the boxing events they did some “shadow dancing” as their entrance. That was quite cool!
Atom may not be in the biggest or the flashiest bot in the ring, but he is the most extraordinary. He is the “hero” robot. Of all the robots, Atom is my favorite. I just love him and love how the whole movie made him seem so sweet and sincere. Yes, he was a robot, but they portrayed him to be more “human” than all the rest. Kinda like the puppy of the family – loyal to all ends of time to “his” family.
The other part of the movie – the whole movie was about this actually – was the evolving relationship between father and son. They just met. They didn’t know each other one ounce at the beginning of the movie. My husband and I love boxing and while the movie is about boxing robots, it is also about a growing bond between father and son. From not knowing each other at all in the beginning to what happens in the end (I’m totally not telling you the ending, you have to get it yourself), it’s definitely worth the watch.
One quote in the movie was “He’s got to have a weakness, find it.” Foreshadowing is say 😉 And you will know what i mean after you watch the movie yourself.
The show isn’t over when the credits roll. You have to check out the Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ in the BONUS FEATURES. There was SO much more that went into this movie than I originally thought. That is only one of the BONUS FEATURES, there were a lot to choose from.

May 21, 2012 at 9:05 pmHi, Just wanted to say I like the fact that when I cheer a conmemt now, I’m not automatically sent to that thread. I like it that when I cheer, I stay on the subscriptions page or the recent entries page, and also that it shows right on that page how many cheers I have left. Much more convenient and lots less clicking on the back button. Thanks!
