remembering 9/11

9/11 is a happy day for me and a sad day for oh so many.  It is happy because it is my Father’s birthday. So that is why I celebrate 9/11.  But the sadness that surrounds this date is just so strong. All the loss.

Can you believe it has been 11 years since the attacks occurred on our country on 9/11/01?

Where were you when you heard the news?  What were you doing?

I personally did not know anyone that was in the attacks, but I mourn still for all the losses that occurred that day and mourn for those that are still suffering.  If you knew anyone that passed that day, I am so sorry!  I can’t imagine the sorrow that many feel on this day and many other days throughout the year due to the loss they experienced this day.

I hope today finds you thankful for what we have and what a great country we have.

I was living in Los Angeles. I had just moved there after graduating and was living with three roommates. The phone rang very early, waking me up. I answered saying, “Who died?” … like I knew something was horribly wrong. My mom told me to turn on the TV.
The four roommates, and a friend who had just driven across country to help move one of the roommates, sat in front of our TV watching the world change. Our apartment also happened to face the Federal Building in LA. While all planes had been grounded, military helicopters still flew around the building and snipers stood guard on the rooftop. Nobody knew exactly what was going on — so we just sat and watched (while trying to call our friends and loved ones in NYC).
Even thousands of miles away the impact started to be felt immediately. People were walking around the streets crying. A memorial had already been put up in front of a GAP store down the street that evening for an employee and his partner who had been on one of the planes headed to LA. We ended up going out to a restaurant that night (we had no food in the apartment…and kind of didn’t know what to do). It was so quiet. Everyone was just going through the motions. I’ll never forget that day — nor the many people who lost their lives and the loved ones who still mourn them.

Happy birthday to your Daddy 🙂

I was working at the hospital during my clinicals…I was so glad there were TV’s on in my patients rooms so I could keep up to date while I worked with my patients that day. Lots of hugs. I was also at the time living in a student apartment complex that was full to the brim with Coast Guard guys since I was living in a big Coast Gaurd city. I came home to lots of changes and watched as our boys went from protecting our shorelines and saving lives to having to go through weapons training and completely change their safety and protection ways…it was pretty amazing.
