We are big fans of real life hero stories at our house. My kids just love learning the stories and I love that they are getting a little history lesson to go along with it all. Our latest discovery is Sgt. Stubby – the first dog recognized to ever be promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Army!
On April 13, 2018 Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero will be released in theatres across the country and kids old and young can learn about how this amazing pup went from stray to Sargeant.
Here’s some info about the upcoming film, not only does it have an amazing story to tell, the cast and production staff are top notch.
Opening April 13 on approximately 3,000 screens across the U.S. and Canada and coinciding with the year-long 100th commemoration of the United States’ role in the “War to End All Wars,” Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero tells the story of Army “doughboy” Robert Conroy (Logan Lerman) whose life is forever changed when a little stray dog with a stubby tail wanders into a training camp in New Haven, Conn. Conroy gives his new friend a meal, a name, a family and the chance to embark on an adventure that would define a century.
Narrated by Robert’s sister Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter), Stubby and his new best friend quickly find themselves in the trenches of France. Befriended by French poilu Soldier Gaston Baptiste (Gérard Dépardieu), Stubby accompanies the duo along their epic journey through harsh conditions and incredible acts of courage.
Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero was directed by award-winning documentarian Richard Lanni in his feature film debut and stars Logan Lerman (Fury, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson & The Olympians), Helena Bonham Carter (the upcoming Ocean’s 8, the Harry Potter films, The King’s Speech, Sweeney Todd) and Gérard Depardieu (Life of Pi, Cyrano De Bergerac, The Man in the Iron Mask, Green Card).
Featuring an original score by Patrick Doyle (Brave, Thor, Cinderella, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Sgt. Stubby is produced and distributed by Fun Academy Motion Pictures with animation by Mikros Animation, a Technicolor company. Screenwriters are Richard Lanni and Mike Stokey II (Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Alexander, Born on the Fourth of July), with editing by Mark Solomon (Frankenweenie, Chicken Run, Shark Tale, the upcoming Sherlock Gnomes). Produced by Laurent Rodon and Emily Cantrill; and executive produced by Frank Lumpkin III, Tom Sheehan and Richard Lanni.
Genre: Animated, Family, Adventure, History. Running Time: 90 Minutes. Anticipated MPAA Rating: PG.
We were recently introduced to Stubby and his amazing story through the Stubby the Dog Soldier book as well as all the amazing facts and resources available on the Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero movie website. If your kids are fans of history, dogs, or just fun stories I recommend getting a copy of the book and spending some time on the website checking out the many activities, facts, videos, and other great resources before the release date in April.
I even noticed some great resources for teachers and groups. I’m thinking about seeing if any of our other local Homeschool parents want to get a group together to see this great film!
