The “C” word. Cancer. We all know someone who has battled it. Just this week SIMPLE Mom Ginny shared her story with our wonderful readers. I think we can all agree that cancer sucks.
It’s hard enough to wrap your mind around any adult friend or loved one dealing with and battling this horrible disease, but what about when it effects kids? How do you help a child understand as they battle cancer of their own? How do you help them as they watch a loved one take on that fight?
Singing Our Way Through: Songs for the World’s Bravest Kids from Alastair Moock is an album for kids whose lives have been touched by cancer. Alastair had some very personal inspiration for this album when last year one of his twin 5-year-old daughters was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia).
In his own words :: “It felt like we were drowning. For the first week or so, my wife and I walked around the hospital in a trance. Then I went home and got my guitar.” Over the course of the next hospital-bound month, Alastair and his daughter, Clio, sang and wrote songs together in her room. “It was amazing how her mood brightened in those moments. The effect was tangible.”
With the help of some friends and collaborators from the world of Americana music Alastair Moock has made an entire album to inspire and help children as they face difficult illnesses.
I am beyond thankful that my children, and the kiddos of my family and friends are all free from battling life-threatening illnesses like cancer this album was a good (and entertaining) listen for my family. My girls have actually requested to listen to “I Am the Light” and the songs have opened many conversations about cancer as some of the adults who we know battle this disease.
If you know a child dealing with a serious illness, or need a way to ease into a conversation with your kiddo about a serious illness for a loved one I highly suggest Alastair Moock’s Singing Our Way Through: Songs for the World’s Bravest Kids. The money from sales of the album help Moock put copies into the hands of children battling with cancer.
