Summer is in full swing and so is pools and swimming, even with what’s going on. So, here are a few tips from Pool Troopers to help out. There are several things your skin needs in the summer, but the most important one is definitely sunscreen. Sunscreen helps your skin in a few ways: It prevents sun damage, wrinkles and skin cancer.
Do take care with how much sunscreen you apply and how often. Look for a sunscreen that can also moisturize your skin and feed it with antioxidants.
Dry skin on your legs, arms, face and hands can be hard to avoid when you spend significant time in the summer sun or in a pool with chlorine. A little effort is all it takes to keep your skin moisturized, hydrated and glowing.
- After swimming, hit the shower! Rinsing chlorinated pool water off right away with plain water is best. This opens up the pores, which allows the residual chlorine to wash away.
- Avoid soap. Chlorine is a disinfectant, so you don’t need to add more chemicals on top of it. You don’t need to exfoliate or scrub either as that may further irritate already clean skin.
- After showering, apply a mild lotion and put on some comfy, natural-fiber clothing.
- Finish off your post-swim routine with another coat of lotion before bed. You don’t have to rinse it off or apply soap again!
- While not necessary, rinsing off before getting in the pool can be helpful if your skin is particularly sensitive. This allows your hair and skin to absorb regular water before going into highly chlorinated water. Again, the shower is perfect for this!
As much as children enjoy playing in the pool, chlorine, bromine and other chemicals in the pool water can be very harsh to the hair cuticle and skin. Long-term exposure to water can make the hair and skin dry due to depletion of natural oils. Chlorine can also cause severe itching or rashes. Kids are even more sensitive to these chemicals, so they need extra care.
Tips for kids’ skin
- Pool water usually removes the natural oils from children’s skin, leaving it itchy and dry. Use natural moisturizers like coconut oil or moisturizers that contain jojoba oil or shea butter.
- Shampoo with a neutral pH is also perfect for kids since it removes chlorine from the hair.
- Also, make sure that your kids drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Do not allow them to drink pool water.
