As much as everyone loves plan ahead for the sunny days of summer, it’s those occasional rainy days that tend to throw us all for a loop. One of my rainy day back ups are movies and our newest pick is Smitty from Phase 4 Films.
The movie centers on 13-year-old Ben who, after getting himself involved with the wrong crowd, gets sent to his grandfather’s farm for the summer. Things get interesting when we learn that Ben’s and his grandfather have never met.
Ben’s grandfather (played by Peter Fonda) starts teaching Ben some important life lessons about the importance of friendship, family, and responsibility. With some help from one very lovable dog we see Ben evolve from a petulant, self-centered child into a young man.
The Dove Family-Approved film stars Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Mimic), Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda (Easy Rider, 3:10 to Yuma, Ghost Rider), Academy Award winner Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman, Why did I get Married Too?), and Jason London (Dazed and Confused, Out Cold). From the director of beloved films “The Sandlot,” “First Kid,” and “The Final Season,” Smitty is a heartfelt tale for the entire family.
If you’re in need of a family movie night pick I definitely recommend Smitty, but with its PG rating I’d suggest previewing it to make sure some of the more intense scenes aren’t too much for your kids. This film has a running time of 94 minutes.
