From time to time I get sent movies to screen for SIMPLE that I have not previously heard any reviews about. One of my latest surprise film gems was Space Dogs from Phase 4 Films.
Before I even opened the DVD case I assumed my girls would sit through Space Dogs because 1) it was an animated cartoon; 2) it is obviously about animals; and 3) the 2 main characters are dogs.
Not only did my 2-year-old and 4-year-old both sit through the entire 88 minute movie, they immediately restarted it for round 2 when I got up to move our laundry along.
The exciting, animated tale based on the true story of Belka and Strelka; two Russian dogs sent to space in 1960. A circus dog and a stray dog embark on an out-of-this-world adventure to become the world’s most famous canine cosmonauts! Space Dogs is a fully animated CGI film with a production budget of $35,000,000 and is loaded with special features including a downloadable activity kit, stills gallery and trailer.
Belka and Strelka, along with their fellow passengers from Sputnik 5, were the first Earth-born creatures to make it into orbit and return alive. The film is full of historical facts and is a great way to teach some Space Race history to a Rated-G crowd.
It shouldn’t be surprising that Space Dogs was originally created for a Russian audience as Belka and Strelka are a matter of Russian national pride and historical significance. It’s good to note that the original language for the film was Russian because the English dubbing doesn’t 100% match (it’s very good though) and all writing on signs is in Russian as well.
