As we were talking, I leaned in just enough to see that there were tiny charms in her locket. “A clear locket,” I thought. “That’s brilliant!” I couldn’t help but steer the conversation to her jewelry. Not only did she have on this clear locket, she also had on several beautiful bangles and these amazing earrings. “Okay,” I said, “so tell me about this locket.” She proceeded to tell me about Origami Owl and how you choose charms for your locket that will tell your own special story. And then she began to tell me her story. For each of her children, she had a charm that represented something they really loved. For her son she had a baseball, for her daughter there was a horse, and for her other daughter a simple little flower.
As soon as we finished up our conversation, I looked up Origami Owl and learned some really cool stuff about the company. Did you know it was started by a teenage girl? Her parents encouraged her to earn her own money to buy a car when she turned 16 and so she set her mind to it and created Origami Owl, which has become a multi-million dollar business. In-credible!
So how do you create your own Origami Owl Living Locket that will tell your story?
- Start by choosing a locket – there are more than 20 options!
Mine is the large silver one with crystals. I like sparkly things! - And then (this is the really fun part) pick out charms to fill your locket! There are hundreds of choices!
A large locket will hold approximately 7-12 charms, medium will hold about 4-7 charms, and small will hold one or two. I let each of my children pick the charm they liked the most and ended up with a soccer ball, turtle, paw print, and blue-eyed owl. - Now pick a chain and any extras that you’d like, such as plates or dangles.
And the fun’s not over! You can keep adding to your locket. I hope that for Mother’s Day maybe I’ll get a birthstone for each child. Or buy a variety of charms and change out your locket for different occasions. Or make a bracelet instead of a necklace next time.
