When I was a kid my mom was a bit of a health nut. There weren’t many ‘convenience’ foods that were allowed in our house and one of the few places we would see ‘convenience’ was in our breakfast cereal choices. Even then there were only a handful of options that would make it into our cupboard, but I remember ALWAYS having a choice of Cheerios.
Does anyone else remember the big yellow box from way back in their early years? I’m sure that one day in the not-so-distant future my girls will have similar recollections. There aren’t many cereal options I allow them either (red dyes make them cRAzY!) but I know that even when it’s an option allowed by mom it still has to pass the kid approval test. Of course, I don’t think it comes as any surprise to any parent who has ever given their kid Cheerios that those little O’s of goodness pass said test year after year, and generation after generation.
I recently was given the opportunity (and was curiously motivated) to learn more about this classic kid-friendly food. Did you know that you can make homemade O’s from scratch? Seriously, check out this post from KathEats.com for the details, it’s a fun and fairly simple food project! She also has a fun recipe to use those homemade O’s (or regular Cheerios) to make some healthy snack balls that take about 5 minutes to assemble and are a great alternative to some of the other options you might reach for during the dreaded mid-afternoon slump.
Now, I have always been a plain or basic Cheerios kind of girl. Milk, maybe some fruit or honey, a bowl and spoon and I’m ready for my Cheerios. Then I saw the variety of recipes that Cheerios has listed on their website. Things like chocolate drenched Cheerios that are cemented together with marshmallow goodness had me salivating at my computer screen. *sigh* They had me at chocolate & marshmallow…
Whether it be as a healthy snack ball, straight out of the box, in a bowl with milk, smothered in chocolate and cemented together with marshmallow, as a first finger food, or in a bag of trail mix, Cheerios has been a family favorite around here for a long time.
So tell me, what’s your favorite way to enjoy Cheerios or recipe that uses the little O’s as an ingredient?

November 24, 2014 at 8:30 amWe love “fried” Cheerio’s. Spray a pay with butter flavored cooking spray (or use real butter) and sprinkle some salt on them and toast them until they are a dark, golden brown. Delicious!
