I have been a secretary and as times have changed…administrative assistant…since 1999. To say I love office supplies is an understatement. They make my heart beat a little faster with glee. Yup, I’m a total office supply nerd. Whether or not office supplies are fun to you, they are a necessary part of keeping life in order.
I currently am very blessed to be able to work from home as an administrative assistant for our church. It’s about 15 hours per week. If you do the math, that is about 2 hours a day during afternoon nap time for the kids. Of course I grab hours outside of their napping schedule, but it gives me mom guilt. I have to be extra vigilant to stay organized so I can keep up with my other responsibilities as mom, wife, and writer for Simple!
Staples, the world’s largest office product company and second largest internet retailer, sent me a package of goodies to try out and help me stay organized. They also passed on these tips below:
- Shed – purge unwanted files or papers and organize the documents in binders. The Internal Revenue Service recommends keeping important business records from three to seven years, depending on the documents.
Staples recently launched its Binder Recycling Program, which gives customers $2 off the purchase of a new binder for each binder they bring in to a Staples store to recycle.
- Shred – protect your business and identity against fraud by shredding unneeded paperwork with sensitive information. For larger jobs, consider Staples Copy & Print, which offers confidential shredding at great prices.
A large portion of getting my desk organized was shredding old documents. I have a shredder, but Staples has FREE shredding now through April 30th, 2013. No coupon required. They will shred up to 5 lbs.
- Get Ahead – The New Year is also a good time to make sure electronic files are secure and protected. It’s critical for any small business owner to have the right organizational tools such as network storage devices to back up files especially as tax season gets started.

I have been part of the Staples Rewards program since 2004. I buy nearly all of my office supplies as well as the supplies for the company I work for from Staples. I’ve found that we save more money by being loyal to one company. We enjoy all the perks and rewards of their various programs. They send coupons too!
