The first time I took my daughter to the dentist, she would not open her mouth. Really. She did not open her mouth the entire time. No amount of pleading, begging and {yes, I’ll admit} even bribing was going to change her mind. It was one of those moments I thought “Wow, I guess I should have done a bit more to prepare her for this!”
Children’s author Karisa Lowe was clearly ahead of me on this one. She created a series of books to introduce kids to new experiences through the eyes of Arlo the Elephant. Arlo is an adorable elephant who goes on many adventures both in his imagination and in reality. Right now there are three books in Karisa Lowe’s Arlo series: Arlo Goes to the Dentist, Arlo and the Airplane and Arlo Goes to the Farmer’s Market.
Each book helps prepare your child for a new experience. In Arlo Goes to the Dentist, Arlo imagines his teeth going through a carwash. In Arlo the Airplane, Arlo imagines all of the ways he might “fly”–with a cape, hanging from balloons and finally sitting on a cloud. And in Arlo Goes to the Farmer’s Market, Arlo tries to think of what he will do with his very own farmer from the market and wonders how he will eat a rainbow. Of course, in the end, Arlo has great experiences at the dentist and on an airplane. And he learns to love new fruits and vegetables at the farmer’s market.
These books are meant for an age range from around 4-7. My older children (6 and 8) thought Arlo was cute and silly. They appreciated his active imagination. My {very active} two year old liked looking at Arlo the Elephant, but wasn’t able to sit to listen to the full book. I’m glad to have them, though, to read when we are getting ready to take on a new challenge. I have high hopes that we won’t have a repeat of my daughter’s first visit to the dentist.
***Edited to add–My 2-year-old is now obsessed with Arlo and the Farmer’s Market. He asks for it several times a day.
